Re: Safe Bowls
Yes, I hear you regarding the running about to sort their tables out. It takes me plenty of time to change the water and bath them. I'm always running in and out of the lounge with buckets and basins but it finally occurred to me the other day to bath them in the utility and it feels so much simpler...

Re: Safe Bowls
Thank you Nina, I have responded to your guidelines post and when you see it, I will try to delete it. Thank you for the good news that I can use the light plant saucers. I am really pleased about that. You also gave me great advice on hibernating my two last November. Well they came out of the frid...

Re: Safe Bowls
Thank you Reggie,
Thank you for responding. I use those type outdoors. They look great. After the heavy awkward resin rock type indoors, however, I am looking something light for daily indoor water dish so I am really glad to see plastic plant saucers will do well.

Re: Are resin water bowls safe? Brown residue comes off.
Thank you Nina. I love that picture. The rocks are a brilliant idea. I am currently using flat bendy bridges by the bowl. I'm very glad to hear I can use the normal plant saucers. They are a great size and depth for what I need. NB This post ended up in guidelines as I was trying to remember/check h...

Safe Bowls
Hi, Regarding those rock style water bowls made from food grade resin; they look great but I found that when I wash it and then rub it with a paper towel, a brown residue comes off. Surely no reptile should be ingesting this. Any idea if they are really safe, and don't make the water unpleasant? Wha...

Re: To the shed to cool off before fridge. Advice please
Goodness Nina, what a shock to find a ‘starved’ cold tortoise awake 2 weeks in.
That had better not happen to me.
Maybe I will be lucky and the Hermanns will just quiten down and do as they're bid.

Re: To the shed to cool off before fridge. Advice please
Hi Nina, It’s great to get that document. Thank you. I had no idea tortoises might move around for several days in the fridge. I thought the cold would keep them still. I really, really hope none of mine take too long to hibernate because that sounds quite unsettling. :( Well here’s hoping for a goo...

Re: To the shed to cool off before fridge. Advice please
Hi Nina, Great to get such a helpful reply. Thank you. Regarding his weight, I was weighing him post soak daily in week one and the weights were 525, (grams) 518, 512, 511, 517, 525. (I thought he had taken on water; scales had female on same weight as previous day so seemed accurate.) After that it...

To the shed to cool off before fridge. Advice please
Hi all, Thank you Lin and Nina for your help on previous thread, and to anyone else who might have some advice on this one. I am winding down my 5YO male Hermanns for 24 days (four 6 day weeks) and we are now on day 15 with heat and light reducing daily to reach 4hrs in 3 days time. His weight has g...

Re: No weight gain in summer/ weight loss. Safe to brumate?
Hi Nina, It’s very good of you to give me another detailed response. It is all so helpful. That is very interesting that I should wind him down for less time. As you can see, he is still very active and seems to be having a lot of fun with his acrobatics in his enclosure. She just wants to sleep ble...

Re: No weight gain in summer/ weight loss. Safe to brumate?
Hi Lin, Thank you for taking the time to write a helpful reply. It is so so good to have someone to ask. I think I am going to go ahead with brumation as it just feels like the right thing to do. I will weigh daily and check their weights at the end of the 4 weeks wind down. I am using the wind down...

No weight gain in summer/ weight loss. Safe to brumate?
Hi, I have two 5½ year old Hermanns tortoises, one male one female. They live separately indoors, and go out for a few hours in good weather. I really wanted to hibernate them this year. Especially the female but I am concerned about their lack of weight gain. They were successfully hibernated last ...
