I’ve just cut down an oak tree in my garden and wondered if the logs would be suitable once cleaned and dried out to use in Darwin’s enclosure? Never have used chemicals in my garden so that isn’t a concern. If I put some of the thin branches through a shredder would they be suitable to use in the substrate(currently just coconut coir) once dried out and cleaned?
Many thanks!

Re: Oak log in horsfield enclosure
Hi Aidan,
I think that should be fine. We don't recommend feeding oak leaves to tortoises as they are high in tannins https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=261&c=4 but a dried out log should present no problems, and I think the small branches shredded might be OK, but do be careful that the individual pieces don't have any sharp ends that could damage an eye or a throat if accidentally swallowed.
What species of tortoise to you have?
Nina
