Weeping shell

Post by Oliv » 21 Feb 2025, 23:48

I have just got a tortoise. He is approx 80 years old. He has just woken up from hibernation - his shell is weeping in one area , the hibernation box he was in was not very clean , we have bathed him but very concerned about this area of his shell. He seems lively and his eyes, beak are all healthy. Anything we can do for his shell - will take him to the vet but not open until Monday.

Hi Oliv.
Could you possibly send in a photo of the tortoise and the area where it is weeping and I would suggest while your sending a photo and waiting for my reply, it would be a good idea if you made arrangements with a reptile vet that has specialist knowledge in treating tortoises. Making an appointment now can always be cancelled if we deem it is not necessary.
We also have a list of qualified vets incase you don’t have one but if there isn’t one on there then let us know the area you are in and we can have a look to see what’s available.

Looking forward to receiving the photos.

Did you see a vet? but in the meantime, keep the affected area clean and dry, avoid excessive handling, and ensure your tortoise stays in a warm, clean environment to prevent infection.
