Zippy is a one-year-old Mediterranean tortoise. This week, I noticed he had a patch of dry skin on the top of his neck. You can only see it when he elevates his head. Does it require treatment? Have I done something wrong?
Thanks!
Is this skin problem serious?
Re: Is this skin problem serious?
Hiya, and welcome.
No, you haven’t done anything wrong, this is about the time tortoises have a little growing time and what you are seeing is the skin flaking, like in all reptiles but with tortoises it comes off is small pieces and not single or full skins like snakes. It’s nothing to worry about but don’t try and help it off, it will eventually fall away.
If you could get a photo just so I can be 100% sure it would be better.

Dry skin on Zippy’s neck is likely normal shedding. If it's flaky but not discolored or swollen, no treatment is needed. Ensure proper humidity (40-60%), hydration, UVB exposure, and a good diet. If it worsens, see a reptile vet.
