Any advice in potentially offering a home.
I currently have a male Hermanns who has led a solitary life for the last 50/60 years, I would love him to have a "companion" I realise that another male would cause potential clashes, I have also been concerned that if I introduced an adult female mine may harass her and it seems that there can be a problem if eggs become involved! Could I be looking for problems and should I leave well alone or could it work for their benefit?. Plenty of secure room etc, thanks for any thoughts, experience etc.
Potential to rehome?
Re: Potential to rehome?
Hi dorkins, it’s lovely you wanting to rehome and you have your info absolutely correct.
If you did get another hermann would you have provisions to separate them if problems should arise.
As you know males might fight and there is a solution to that, and that is to have two or three females so the lone male has a choice and doesn’t need to harass a single female, however that isn’t without issues and he could still just choose a dominant female to pester and would need to be separated from the ladies.
Tortoises usually do stay separate in the wild and only meet for mating so there isn’t a need on your tortoises part for company, that is a human feeling but I do understand.
It it were me and I was in your situation I would leave your young man to live out his life as he has been doing in your loving care rather than running the risk of upsetting him and causing any distress to his accustomed life.
Hope this is helpful and we would love to see a photo of him if you have one handy.

Re: Potential to rehome?
Hi Lin
Thank you for your advice, in hindsight I think you are probably right, upsetting half a century of routine may not be best, I would hate to upset him or cause problems so will leave well alone. He has passed all his exams, he woke up well, basks, bathes and drinks well, fed well and as usual, wee'd and poo'd well! He now heads for the back door and gazes wistfully out at the cold, rain and snow, if he only knew!
I am so pleased, as I have said in another post, he was my wifes for 50/60 years of his life, sadly we lost her last March and the responsibility has now passed to me, so I have to do a good job!
I will post a picture, he's gone to bed now
