Are resin water bowls safe? Brown residue comes off.

Post by Autumn » 24 Feb 2025, 22:08

Hi,

Regarding those rock style water bowls made from food grade resin; they look great but I found that when I wash it and then rub it with a paper towel, a brown residue comes off.

Surely no reptile should be ingesting this. Any idea if they are really safe, and don't make the water unpleasant?

Many thanks

Gosh, I don't know -- but that's a really interesting question. I've never used those bowls (I just use ordinary, plastic plant saucers with sides an inch or two high and they work well, and I sink them into the substrate leaving only a little above the substrate and then put flat pebbles around it so that the substrate isn't dragged into the water. It certainly doesn't sound good that some residue is rubbing off! Hope fully someone else will come on with a good answer.
Have attached a photo of one I used to use which is an inch or so deep, but I have an ordinary brown plant saucer that is a little deeper that I also use.

Thank you Nina. I love that picture. The rocks are a brilliant idea. I am currently using flat bendy bridges by the bowl. I'm very glad to hear I can use the normal plant saucers. They are a great size and depth for what I need.

NB This post ended up in guidelines as I was trying to remember/check how to post. When you have read my response, I will try to delete it.

Many thanks
