Trying to fix a hide - safe materials?

Hello! I have broken a hide at work (oops) and I have read some conflicting information on materials to fix it. Has anyone used clay? Would I need to seal it? I know silicon is one people often use, but I don't have the missing chunk and I thought that wouldn't be sturdy enough by itself. I could possibly put a fake plant in the hole and silicon it in place. Thoughts?

My best thoughts are to make a clay insert and seal it in place. Is the hide resin? If it is you can you can buy resin and make a part to fix over the hole. Oh, how about epoxy, spread it loosely over the break and let it set. It dries rock hard. If you work fast you could even colour it with a touch of food colour.

If you go with clay, make sure it’s the right type for your hide material. Once it dries, you might want to seal it with a suitable finish to protect it and blend it in
